And so ends the first week of the FMP! I have been mostly planning the project this week and establishing the general idea and narrative. To help me with this, I have created a moodboard that best outlines the main idea I'm going for.
My project scene will consist of three areas:
- The ship cockpit
- The station docking tube
- The station interior
My aim for this project is to produce a cinematic short that is a fly-through of the docking tube and the cockpit environment, with the station interior serving as a backdrop. My main inspiration for this project comes from a long time passion for all things space-related, especially past and present space programs such as Apollo, Soyuz, Space Shuttle and the ISS. I just love how these are symbols of adventure and technological innovation and I wanted to pay homage to that in my work.
I also sought inspiration from other sources such as the artwork of Paul Pepera, Tor Frick, Syd Mead and Paul Chadeisson, all of whom have very distinct and unique styles. Furthermore, I drew inspiration from old space books and various sci-fi media such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Prey (2017), Interstellar, Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen; with minor inspiration coming from Blade Runner and Akira. I chose these because they have very unorthodox and interesting styles and narratives, which I feel I could convey in my own work.
The cockpit section would feature a more Soviet and functional appearance, akin to a blend of the Soyuz, Mir and ISS space programs and the movie Interstellar; whereas, the station would feature a style similar to the ISS and more near-future spacecraft designs. This contrast between style will hopefully reinforce the idea that the ship predates the space station and is a reminder of progress in space exploration.
I have drawn up a plan for the project and I have produced a list of assets that will feature in the different environments:
I feel this week went well as I have produced a definite idea for the project and I am totally immersed in the subject, which I believe will aid my motivation. On the other hand, I feel a bit overwhelmed at the moment when producing the list of assets as there are a lot of elements to the scene; however I feel this will get better and more refined as I progress through the project.
I have a good feeling about next week :D
