This week I have had my presentation with the tutors regarding the progress of my level. They advised me to reduce the scope of the scene by removing the originally intended docking tube and instead focusing all my efforts on the main cockpit area. They also suggested to add dynamic elements such as ambient steam, flashing lights and moving components in order to add some life to the scene and make it look inhabited. Ahead of this feedback I have decided to scale down the docking tube to a small entrance to be used as a composition tool.
I have also been experimenting with the padding inside the cockpit area using a placeholder texture from a previous project. I used tessellation to add padding to the surface with vertex painting controlling the amount of padding. This allows me to add variation where needed and to prevent clipping through objects attached to it.
I have also been modelling cargo bags for the cockpit and I had decided to sculpt them in ZBrush and bake in Substance Designer.
I have also been working on ambient particles for the scene which will help convey mood and atmosphere.
I have also been creating general purpose materials for the scene, such as the painted metal based on old soviet cockpit materials.
I have also created a netting material that will be used to secure the cargo bags to the side of the space craft. It uses rotation maps and masks to determine the direction and areas to be stitched.
